My favorite baby tub is $20 [🎁 gift inside]

Yesterday we zoomed out on the big picture (if you didn't get the blueprint the link is below).

Today let's zoom in on the thing almost every first-time parents spend waaaay too much money on: baby gear.

After a decade working overnights I've noticed something about the parents who struggle less in those early weeks.

They're not the ones with a bouncy seat on every floor.

or the ones with the fanciest bassinet.

It's the people who understand what's normal for a newborn.

Because when you don't know what's normal, everything starts to look like a problem.

Every grunt.

Every crazy colored poop.

Every feeding that never seems to end.

Cue the 2am googling spiral. "Is this sound normal?" "Why is my baby grunting?" "What color is baby poop?"

One of the biggest parts of my doula work is helping parents understand what's TYPICAL.

That's what stops the second-guessing and anxiety before it starts.

🎁 YOUR DAY 2 GIFT:

FIRST MONTH ESSENTIALS

This is the list of what you'll actually use in the first month.

Registries get overwhelming fast. And expensive.

You don't need a potty or baby locks right now.

You need the things that help your baby acclimate to life outside the belly.

And more expensive doesn't mean better. πŸ› My favorite baby tub is $20.

Why my doula clients love this list:

β€’ no house full of stuff you won't use or regret buying

β€’ have what you actually need when the "is this normal" moments come up.

πŸ€” NEWBORN NUGGET

"Normal" for a newborn looks nothing like normal for an adult.

Crying, grunting, rooting, cluster feeding, and short naps are all typical, even when they don’t feel that way at 2am.

When you understand what’s normal and have the right essentials:

  • You hear a stuffy sound? You know it's congestion and have saline and the aspirator that's easy to use (not that weird bulb thing).
  • You recognize overtired cues and have a swaddle ready
  • You call the ped worried baby's sick and know the ear thermometer is not the temp they'll ask for.

Knowledge + the right gear = πŸ˜…

πŸ™ŒπŸΌ ONE SMALL THING TO DO TODAY

Open the Essentials List and click the two links at the top (part 1 and part 2).

This way you can see what the items on the list are. Then go ahead and check off if there's anything you've already purchased or registered for.

If you have an hour free tonight and want to see an example of typical newborn behavior that fools so many first-time parents click here.

I’ll be back tomorrow with Day 3 (and another gift) πŸ’›

As this Countdown to Labor Day Series ends today you should be proud of yourself! You did something most first-time parents don't. You prepared before your baby arrived. That alone puts you ahead. If you've been wondering when to start pumping, what supplies you actually need, and how to set yourself up before baby arrives, today's gift was made for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 🎁 YOUR DAY 12 GIFT: The Pumping Checklist A week-by-week...

Happy Saturday Reader! After a decade as a postpartum doula, I can tell you the parents who feel calmest aren't the ones with the fanciest gear. They're the ones who understand what's normal, know what to watch for, and have support lined up. πŸ‘† That last piece is the one people skip. Usually because it sounds nice but feels out of reach. Doula support is not as out of reach as you might think. Families make it work by... πŸ“ adding a doula fund to the registry πŸ“planning for just one or two...

Hi Reader, Quick question: Are you planning to pump at all? Even occasionally? If yes, here's something worth knowing before baby gets here: Breastmilk storage is one of those things that will constantly have you second guessing yourself. How long has this been sitting out? Is it still good? Do I toss it or do I use it? And when you’re tired, the last thing you want is to guess...or worse, waste milk you worked hard to pump. Before we get to today’s gift, one quick tip: When you freeze milk,...
