๐ŸŽ Day 12: Letโ€™s talk about postpartum support

Hi Reader,

It's the final day of your Baby Prep Advent ๐ŸŽ

I hope the past 12 days have given you resources that make life with your new baby go more smoothly.

That has been my goal ever since I started working as a postpartum doula more than ten years ago.

One of the most common questions I'm asked in my instagram DMs is how to find a postpartum doula, so I thought I'd give you a resource to make that easier. (if you're not already following on IG click here)

If your first reaction to hiring a doula is, โ€œThat sounds nice, but not realistic for us,โ€ let me share a few ways families make support doable even on a limited budget.

  • Add a doula fund to your registry.โ€‹
People want to give you something youโ€™ll truly use. Let them contribute toward a few nights of support.
  • Save for one or two nights.โ€‹
I have worked with families for months, but that is not always the case. There's a group of girlfriends who give one another ONE night of my support whenever someone has a baby.
  • Look for a doula in the certification process.โ€‹
These doulas need to support families to gain experience for certification, so their support is often offered at a deep discount. They may ask for a short write up about how they did in return.

There are a lot of opinions about hiring a doula:

โ€œMom wonโ€™t bond with the baby if she hires help.โ€
โ€œMoms who breastfeed canโ€™t have a doula.โ€
โ€œMust be nice, I did it all myself.โ€

False.
False.
And rude.

After more than a decade of supporting hundreds of families, I can tell you this: every single family was grateful for the support.

You will still bond with your baby.

โ€‹
There are 24 hours in a day. Having support for part of that time does not make you a bad mom. It often makes you a more confident, well rested one.

And yes, you can absolutely hire a doula if youโ€™re breastfeeding.โ€‹
If I were your doula, Iโ€™d wake you to feed, observe the latch, help with burping and settling, and send you back to bed until the next feeding.

๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ ONE SMALL THING TO DO TODAY

Talk with your partner about whether postpartum doula support is something you would like to consider, even if it is just for a night or two.

This is the final day of the Baby Prep Advent and Iโ€™ve loved sharing these free gifts with you.

As you prepare for your baby, Iโ€™m honored to be a resource for you and will continue sharing support, tips, and tools to help you enjoy the newborn stage, not just survive it.

๐ŸŽ If you missed any of the Advent gifts, you can grab them all HERE until the end of the month.

xoxo,

Welcome to Day 11 of your Baby Prep Advent Reader! As an overnight doula, one of my favorite things to do for brand new parents is make a meal in the middle of the night so it is waiting for them in the refrigerator in the morning. Then they just have to pop it in the crockpot or oven. There's so much thought around feeding the baby, sometimes new parents forget to take care of themselves. It's like the directions they give on the airplane... you need to take care of yourself so you're able...

Itโ€™s Day 10 of your Baby Prep Advent ๐ŸŽ And todayโ€™s gift is one of those simple setups that makes the early weeks with a newborn feel much more manageable. Diaper changes happen all day and all night, which is why having a changing station on each floor can be so helpful. You'll be so glad to have what you need, where you need it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ๐ŸŽ YOUR DAY 10 GIFT: The Changing Station This checklist walks you through exactly...

Hi Reader, It's Day 9 of your Baby Prep Advent ๐ŸŽ„ Are you planning to pump? If so here's a little tip to optimize freezer space.... When you freeze breastmilk, lay the bags flat on a cookie sheet. Once they are frozen you can stand them up or place several flat bags into a gallon storage bag. This saves space and keeps your freezer more organized. Understanding storage guidelines for breastmilk is so important, so you don't waste any of that liquid gold. You'll definitely want to screenshot...
