Day 2 🎁 What Newborns Really Need (and what they don't)

It's Day 2 of your Baby Prep Advent 🎄

Yesterday we talked about the big picture, today let's zoom in and talk about what's top of mind for so many of my doula clients - baby gear.

After 10+ years as a postpartum doula, I can tell you this with total confidence. . .

The parents who struggle less in the newborn stage are NOT the ones with the most gear.

They aren't the ones who bought the expensive bouncy seat or the fancy bassinet (but I do love the snoo, we'll talk more about that another day).

They’re the ones who understand typical newborn behavior.

Because when you don’t know what’s typical, everything feels like a reason to call the pediatrician's after-hours line.

When it’s 2am and you’re googling “what color is baby poop?" or "congested sound normal for newborn" and "newborn sleep noises"

One of the biggest things I do as a doula is help parents understand normal newborn behavior so they don’t panic….and aren't constantly second-guessing themselves.

🎁 YOUR DAY 2 GIFT:
FIRST MONTH ESSENTIALS

The First Month Essentials is a list of the things you’ll actually use in the first month.

Registries can be overwhelming...and expensive.

You don’t need a potty or baby locks right now, you need the things that will help your baby acclimate to life outside the belly

❌ And when it comes to baby gear, more expensive definitely doesn’t mean better (🛁 my favorite baby tub is $20).

Why parents love this list:

• you're not cluttering your house with gear you'll hate or won't use for months

• having what you need makes the “Is this normal?” moments feel manageable

🤔 NEWBORN NUGGET

"Normal" for a newborn looks very different than normal for an adult.

Crying, grunting, rooting, cluster feeding, and short naps are all typical, even when they don’t feel that way at 2am.

When you understand what’s normal and have the right essentials:

  • you know a stuffy sound is congestion — and you have saline and an aspirator
  • you recognize overtired cues — and have a swaddle ready
  • you’re prepared when the pediatrician asks for a temperature

🙌🏼 ONE SMALL THING TO DO TODAY

Open the Essentials List and click the two links at the top (part 1 and part 2).

This way you can see what the items on the list are. Then go ahead and check off if there's anything you've already purchased or registered for.

I’ll be back tomorrow with Day 3 (and another gift).
You’re doing such a good job already 💛

Hi Reader, It's the final day of your Baby Prep Advent 🎁 I hope the past 12 days have given you resources that make life with your new baby go more smoothly. That has been my goal ever since I started working as a postpartum doula more than ten years ago. One of the most common questions I'm asked in my instagram DMs is how to find a postpartum doula, so I thought I'd give you a resource to make that easier. (if you're not already following on IG click here) If your first reaction to hiring a...

Welcome to Day 11 of your Baby Prep Advent Reader! As an overnight doula, one of my favorite things to do for brand new parents is make a meal in the middle of the night so it is waiting for them in the refrigerator in the morning. Then they just have to pop it in the crockpot or oven. There's so much thought around feeding the baby, sometimes new parents forget to take care of themselves. It's like the directions they give on the airplane... you need to take care of yourself so you're able...

It’s Day 10 of your Baby Prep Advent 🎁 And today’s gift is one of those simple setups that makes the early weeks with a newborn feel much more manageable. Diaper changes happen all day and all night, which is why having a changing station on each floor can be so helpful. You'll be so glad to have what you need, where you need it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 🎁 YOUR DAY 10 GIFT: The Changing Station This checklist walks you through exactly...
